Madison Warhawk Frosh Football 2018 (May)
Freshman football is a great experience. Young men are challenged as never before. A successful season involves learning, growing, working, winning & having fun. We strive to develop individuals and team while keeping football in the proper supportive relationship to school work.
The Madison community encourages students to consider the many athletic opportunities offered through the year and to avoid a focus on one sport. We do, however, expect football players to weight train and condition with the football team when not engaged in another high school sport.
Weight/speed training benefits 8th Graders planning on playing football. Prospective freshman football players are encouraged to join off-season sessions. These hour-long, voluntary sessions take place in the Madison Weight Room from 3 to 4:30 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday through the end of the school year. Summer sessions will likely start at 9 AM & 6 PM – four days & two nights a week (actual dates and times to be announced sometime in May). Parents & students must read, complete and submit the Weight Room Waiver and Emergency Care Form found at Warhawk Sports.org in order to do the off-season sessions
Mandatory practices, start July 31 and go from Monday through Friday with two Saturday morning sessions in August. We start on the field at 6:30 AM and go to noon. Players should be dropped off no later than 6:10 so they can dress & move to the field on time. Players will have one mid-morning break to eat a light meal (if sent with them).
Once school starts, practices will move to 5:30 - 8:30 PM on Mondays and 3:30 – 6:30 PM the rest of the week. We’ll have two scrimmages and eight games, most on Thursday evening at 5:45. The actual schedule will be posted on our web site as soon as it is known. Extensive paperwork (physicals, waivers, participation policies, concussion orientations, etc.) must be completed and submitted before players can practice; details will be provided on our website as soon as 2018-2019 forms are available. Included in this requirement is a mandatory physical (completed after May 1, 2018) on the current Virginia High School League form.
We will offer a Spirit Pack (cost approximately $110.00) for players’ practice jerseys, pants, girdles, shirts and shorts. It should be preordered to insure players are ready to practice on August 1. More detailed information will be provided in June/July. Madison provides a locker (player provides a combination lock) and all football equipment, except shoes. Football shoes should be predominantly black with screw-in (not molded rubber) cleats.
Future information on team activities will be sent to those who complete the form found at: Madison Freshman Football Player & Family Information Sheet. Please call/contact Coach Ginley with any questions and check the News tab on the Freshman Football web site for new info:

WHY FROSH FOOTBALL?
There are several reasons why I think playing football will be beneficial. The first is that playing multiple sports, football in particular, will help development as all around athletes. The 2017 season there were 6 football players on the regional championship basketball team, 6 football players on the conference championship baseball team and 12 football players on the varsity lacrosse team. The coaches at Madison love to have smart, athletic, physical players that love to compete. Football develops all of those skills.
The second reason is that playing a fall sport entering your freshman year of high school has major social benefits. Kids will get into the routine of getting up early. They will have a built in peer group when school starts and they will meet a large number of older students prior to their first day. Academics are a huge focus of the players in our program. Of our 28 seniors from this years team 11 of them had a 4.0 GPA or higher. These factors certainly will help make the transition to high school smoother.
For time management and scheduling purposes, the Frosh Football Team plays all of their games on Tuesday through Thursdays and rarely has activities on the weekends. This will allow you to participate in other sports or other activities on the weekends without risking conflicts. Our Frosh Football Program will be very flexible in working with our athletes who play other sports.
All rising 9th grade athletes planning to attend Madison are invited to join our voluntary training & lifting program starting in March. These voluntary sessions start on Monday, March 5, from 3 – 4:30 PM and will repeat every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday thru the end of the school year. Summer sessions will likely start at 9 AM – four days a week (actual dates and times to be announced sometime in May). Parents & students must read, sign & submit the Weight Room Waiver and Emergency Care Form found at Warhawk Sports.org This program is free and focuses on general athletic development and would be beneficial to any prospective athlete regardless of the sport.
Please consider this opportunity and I would be happy to speak with you personally if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached by email at JCounts9@hotmail.com.
